A window seat is the one spot in the house where people will happily sit for hours with nothing to do — if the cushion lets them. Here are the combinations that work, drawn from the cuts we ship every week.
1. The classic 3-inch reading pad
Ninety percent of window seats are happy with a single 3″ cushion in HD36 firm foam: enough loft to lounge, low enough to keep the view. Pair it with a linen blend in a light color and the nook brightens the whole room.
2. Bay windows: split or trapezoid
Two options for angled runs — split the seat into two straight cushions with a seam at the angle (easier to flip and clean), or order one trapezoid cut to the exact angles. The trapezoid looks bespoke; the split looks intentional. Both beat a gap full of pillows.
3. The L-shaped corner nook
Curtained breakfast nooks almost always want an L: one piece wrapping the corner, priced as a single cut. Keep the same thickness on both legs so the cushion reads as one gesture.
4. Double-deep window benches
Deep benches (over 24″) take 4″ foam and a row of 18″ throw pillows along the back — the pillows do double duty as backrests and color.
5. Fabric that lives with sunlight
South-facing seats get faded. Light linen hides it best; save velvets for shaded nooks. For seats that double as guest beds, a Dacron wrap softens the surface without changing the fit.
6. Window seats that sleep
If the nook is a nap spot, step up to HR45 high-resilience and consider a 2–3″ memory foam topper rather than one ultra-soft cushion — support below, pressure relief above.
7. Kids' window seats
Rounded corners on every edge you can see, washable covers, and firmer foam (kids jump). Rounded corners also keep small knees happy on the bench edge.
8. The storage-bench caveat
Measure the top panel, not the lid opening — and order the cushion about ¼″ narrower all round so the lid still closes without pinching.
